"New"s this week

I love new things so I thought I was share with you a few of the “new”s in our home this week.

“New” #1: I finally have figured out a chore system that works for us! I sat down and made a list of all the chores I wanted the girls to do. Then I put each chore into a template in Word, so each 1/4 of a page was a different ‘card’. I printed and laminated them, then hole punched each one at the top. On a long board that my husband stained for me, I put 2 hooks for each girl. The first hook holds the stack of chore cards for the day. When each task is completed, the card is turned over and added to the second hook.

No more trying to remember what each girl is supposed to be doing and when. No more, “it’s not my turn!”, etc. What a blessing to finally have something that will work for us!

“New” #2: We tried a new recipe for supper tonight. Black bean burgers on the grill. They were SO good! Even my husband, the die-hard beef fan, commented that while they didn’t taste like a hamburger, they were still really good. The three girls loved them. Next time I’ll make a larger batch and freeze them. Here is the recipe from Hallelujah Acres:

Black Bean Burgers by Connie

Ingredients

1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 small onion (coarsely chopped)
1 medium red pepper (chopped)
4 medium cloves of garlic (minced)
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1 1/2 cups cooked or canned organic black beans (drained)
1 cup cooked brown basmati rice
2 cups fresh whole wheat bread crumbs
Hot pepper sauce to taste (optional)
Also optional is adding 1 tablespoon of Ketchup (from Rhonda’s Recipe book)
1 1/2 teaspoon Celtic Sea Salt

Directions

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add onion, red pepper, and garlic. Cook while stirring frequently until soft and onions are translucent. Stir in cumin, turmeric, and cook for an additional minute. In a food processor, combine beans, rice and onion/pepper/garlic mixture. Transfer to a large bowl. Add breadcrumbs and mix well. Season with salt and hot pepper if desired. Flatten 1/4 cup amounts of mix into patties and they are ready for the outdoor grill. Cook about 3-5 minutes each side. Makes 8 burgers.

“New” #3: We start a new school year tomorrow! We normally school year round anyway but between our move last summer and the miscarriage this year, we really can’t afford time off. So, we begin anew tomorrow. Our verse for this year is:

Philippians 3:13 - 14 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the Lord is going to do in our lives in this coming school year!
